Ohio University Bobcats

Sometime between 2002-2003, we had just bought a house in Alabama.  I was a Student Minister at the time, and I had a phone call from a man in Ohio.  I remember taking the phone call because I had just pulled up to the house.  We had company already there, and the driveway was full of cars.  I had to park on the side of the street, and I remember talking to him.  A few weeks later, my wife, 6 month old daughter, and I flew to Columbus, OH.  We met the man at the airport, and he drove us around through the state of Ohio and we ended up in Athens, OH.  The only time I’ve been to Ohio was to watch the Cincinnati Reds play.  Now I had an opportunity to interview for a job in Athens, OH, and obviously move my family from Alabama to Ohio.

Let me tell you right now, I never did get the job.  But, I enjoyed our stay while we were interviewing.  I was interviewing for a Campus Ministry position at Ohio University.  Don’t get mistaken…not The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH.  This was Ohio University in Athens, OH.  At the time, I didn’t know anything about Ohio University.  I found out that Thom Brennaman (announcer for the Cincinnati Reds) and Matt Lauer (Co-Host for the NBC “Today Show”) were alumni.  Other than that, I knew nothing.  Didn’t really know about the football program.

So, my wife and I got to walk around campus.  It was beautiful.  It’s a small town, at least during my drive-thru during the interview process.  It’s now known for being the number one “Top Party School For 2012” according to the Princeton Review.  In 2003, there was a bad riot during the city, or university, annual “Halloween Party.”  In 2011, Ohio University was ranked second in the “Top Party School For 2011.”

I didn’t get to see a game at Peden Stadium.  Obviously, I saw the stadium.  Currently, I have moved outside of the Cincinnati, OH area.  I plan on catching a game and driving the 2.5 hours to Athens now that I live close to there.  It will officially be a stadium and game that I can mark off the list.
