University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles

Southern Miss railroad greeting sign In September 2006, my wife and I loaded up the car with our luggage and our two kids going to Orange Beach, AL. We were living in Jonesboro, AR, at the time and we had some people that let us stay at their condo on the beach. Without stopping, the trip would’ve taken us little over 6 hours from Jonesboro to Orange Beach, AL. But, we had two kids in the car plus we stopped several times. We stopped in Hattisburg, MS, to see the University of Southern Mississippi, the home of the Golden Eagles.

Now, in my opinion, there’s not a lot to do in Hattisburg, MS, and once you get out of Hattisburg, there is less things to do. Once we got to the university, you could drive under their stadium, Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium. You can even see the yards marked on the columns that support the stands. You can see banners that reflect the accomplishments of the team. But, no one can forget the well-known Green Bay Packer quarterback Brett Favre who went to Southern Mississippi. You can see his banner as well.

The stadium is known as “The Rock” which dates back to 1938. While the stadium was being built, the football players hauled in concrete to the contractors. This is where “The Rock” got it’s name. [For more information about the history of the stadium, how it got it’s name, how it got it’s nickname, and to read more football players that played professional football, see the University of Southern Mississippi’s website.] I took a picture of the Golden Eagle statue that is outside the new athletic complex, which houses the athletic coaches offices, weight rooms, etc.

Southern Mississippi is a tough team that always contends for the Conference-USA title. Looking at some games on the television, it looks like a tough place to play if your the opponent. We left Hattisburg, MS, and headed to Orange Beach, AL, for vacation. I didn’t see a game at the stadium, which is my goal, but I did see the stadium. Doesn’t that count?
